We provide specialist speech and language therapy interventions and a range of training packages

Speech Therapy North East was established in 2016 with the aim of providing specialist speech and language therapy to people in the North East of England. We work with people aged 15 and above, depending on the nature of their communication, swallowing or voice difficulties.

Speech Therapy North East has quickly grown into a large team of associate independent speech and language therapists which is led by Matthew Nakonesky – Principal Speech and Language Therapist. You can find out more about our team here.

We can now provide services to people in the Lake District and surrounding areas, York and the North Yorkshire areas and Northumberland. Despite being based in the heart of the North East we are more than happy to travel further afield to deliver and showcase the excellent services we have become known for.

Speech Therapy North East services are predominantly carried out in your own home, and range from one off sessions for assessment/advice to longer blocks of therapy with a very client-centred approach at the heart of all interventions. Realistic and client-specific goals will always be set, and therapy blocks will aim to deliver an appropriate mix of therapist led sessions and therapy tasks which can be completed independently or with the support of family members/carers with progress monitored closely. We will always provide open and honest feedback regarding client progress and modify therapy programs accordingly.

The use of technology to provide therapy and to deliver intensive therapy is another area often explored with clients where possible. The use of a tablet or laptop with therapy apps/software is a very useful and effective way in helping deliver and support therapy. We can also provide flexibility in the way we deliver therapy sessions by completing remote therapy sessions when this is clinically appropriate to do so.

Our team is very active in sharing clinical experience and therapy ideas within the team which allows all of our therapists to deliver a fantastic range of therapy approaches to their clients. We have a real commitment to providing innovative therapy interventions and constantly keep up to date with approaches that are fully supported by clinical research.

Speech Therapy North East can also provide training on communication and/or swallowing disorders and can provide tailored training packages for small to large groups.

My partner had a clear structured plan, clear goals to work towards and tasks to practice between sessions. The sessions helped to make a scary time easier for us both and with the improvements we saw came hope!

Matthew was able to provide calm and clear guidance at a very stressful time.  He has been able to provide ongoing support and advice both at home and remotely to my mum, who has made great progress. I would recommend Matthew to anybody who was looking for a speech and language therapist.

This is just the best news! Congratulations James. Really highlights exactly what we hope to achieve at Headway Tyneside in terms of providing and supporting meaningful and positive opportunities for people with an acquired brain injury.

Wk 2 of the Getting Connected group was brill. We learnt that someone received a viking hat 4 X’mas 🤔 but the main part of the session focussed on people’s exp. of communication changes post ABI, the impact it has on friendship circles & what some friends do 2 make things easier

Week 2 of our 1st Getting Connected group 2day. Week 1 we found out that 2/3 of the group would prefer to be invisible than be able to fly, we had an overview of ABI, but most importantly the group shared their personal ABI story & what it meant for them. What will we hear 2day?

Has anyone got a VFSS reporting form/proforma that they are happy to share?

Looking at making some changes but would rather not reinvent the wheel if possible! 🥴
